Swim Lesson Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should parents expect to see when they show up for the sign-up?
    • Sign up occurs from 6-7 pm in the concessions stand and goes alphabetically. Each session rotates which part of the alphabet starts first, so by the end of the summer each group gets to be first once.
    • You may sign up any time after your assigned time slot but not before.
    • Returning members can pick up their child’s white cards from the boxes sitting outside. New members will have white cards made by the lessons instructors at the end of the first session, and can sign up for lessons without the white cards.
    • When signing up for a class, please provide all the information required on the sheet. This will facilitate the staff being able to contact you if a change needs to be made.
    • If you have a hyphenated last name, please sign up with the name that comes first in the child’s last name. Please also be courteous of other members and be consistent with the sign ups.
  • How long is a lesson each day?
    • Lessons run from 10-1 and 5-6:30 each day. The length of each lesson depends on the level. Parent tot through level 3 lessons are 25 minutes long, and levels 4-BWS are 40 minutes long. Each session is two (2) weeks long, five (5) days a week.
  • When should the child be ready for swim lessons?
    • The child should be ready for each day’s lesson about 5-10 minutes before the lesson starts.
  • When does testing take place?
    • Testing takes place everyday during the second week of lessons. It is crucial that the child attends during testing, as most times instructors will only test a given skill on one day.
  • How to provide feedback to instructors / instructor coordinator?
    • At swim lesson sign up, there will be sheets to evaluate instructors. You can also contact Robin Hartung via e-mail at swimlessons@highpointswimclub.com or at the pool anytime.  Robin will also be on deck during lesson times as well.
  • I don’t get the alternate thing – how do I know what days to show up for?
    • Assume that your child can show up and participate in the class for the days that you indicated on the sign-up sheet.
  • How do I know what level my child should start at?
    • Robin will be available at the pool during the week and can test kids to see what level they are in. You can also talk to her to provide the skill level your child knows already, and she can place them that way. If during the first week of classes the instructor finds the child is in the wrong level (either too easy or too challenging) Robin will recommend to you that a switch should be made and can help make the arrangements to make the switch as seamless as possible.
  • How do I know that my child is in a class?
    • As soon as you sign up for a class, your child is enrolled. If you sign up in an alternate spot, be sure to put your e-mail or phone number on the sheet for purpose of confirmations.
